The New World- The Knitters!
Very high quality video of The Knitters doing The New World. Written in the 80's during the Reagan administration and originally performed by X, this song is still relevant in the 21st century. The Knitters is comprised of 3 members of X, DJ Bonebrake- snare drum, Exene Cervenka-vocals, John Doe- vocals and acoustic guitar, in addition to Dave Alvin on electric guitar and Jonny Ray Bartel on stand up bass. Country, rockabilly, punk, folk music is their specialty. Dave Alvin's guitar solo ROCKS!!

Hurt
Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this song. Johnny Cash sings it more beautifully and emotionally than Trent ever could. That's not a bash on Mr. Reznor, it is high praise for the late Mr. Johnny Cash. It's haunting, knowing some of the things that
took place in Johnny's life. Dig it.

Love Me Two Times
I just saw something that blew my mind! It was a video of The Doors minus Jim Morrison, doing Love Me Two Times! Ray Manzarek on the vocals, there are two unknown musicians, a bass player and rhythm guitar, in addition to Robby Krieger and John Densmore. It's not like I know EVERYTHING about The Doors, but I've never seen video of them performing in the early 70's without Jim. Whilst typing this I was visiting the VH1 site, they didn't have it, but youtube DOES! From 1972, The Doors, Love Me Two Times Baby! It's a trip!

Coal Miner's Daughter
I watched the movie about Loretta Lynn's life, "Coal Miner's Daughter", this week for the first time. I had resisted it, poo poo'ed it in fact due to my dislike and ignorance of country music. Now I'm not saying I am a convert, but I am starting to appreciate some of the true country artists. I think it started with The Knitters, I was helped along this road by my dear friend and pen-pal, PJ(who is an amazing guitarist), and was coaxed a little bit more by Jeff Bridges performance in "Crazy Heart".
Here is Loretta singing the movie title song, "Coal Miner's Daughter", then to switch it up I've included her duet "Portland Oregon" with Jack White of the White Stripes. Lorettie's lyrics were her life, she tells it like it is!

Here are two versions of Mesopotamia, one of my fav songs by the B's. Love the live video but actually like the album version of the song best! I've seen the B-52's 11 times now and just LOVE them! They are a non-stop dance party band! Just so funny and so much fun! We miss you Ricky!

Whatcha Gonna Do When You Get Outa Jail?
I LOVE the Tom Tom Club! The ever so talented rhythm section of Talking Heads, husband and wife, Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth and friends. I first saw them at the Knights Of Columbus Hall in Hollywood, which was tiny, it was such a great show! They brought Deborah Harry out for their encore, and did Lou Reed's She's a Femme Fatale. We were at the very front of the stage and were struck w/ hero worship when all of a sudden Deborah Harry was 3 feet from us!! This song has been sampled by everyone!!

The English Beat
I love Ska music and The English Beat is my favorite ska band! The beat is infectious and impossible NOT to dance to. Here is one of their classic songs... Go Feet! I saw Dave Wakeling as a solo artist (and got to meet him, thanks Roberto!) as well as Ranking Roger solo. Ska was HUGE in L.A. in the 80's!! Love it...

The Nightly News
I dedicate this song to the nightly news. It seems that the first 5 minutes at least are all about shootings, kidnapping and murders. The perils of living in such a large metropolis like Los Angeles I guess. As my friend Denise says about the news, " I hate that show!" I saw The Clash and the English Beat one July night in 1981 at the Hollywood Paladium. Still one of the best, most intense shows I've ever experienced!

What a great 80's band! I love Berlin! We went to see them in Denver one night, they were opening for Yes. I was there to see Berlin and Yes would be a bonus for me. When it came time for Berlin to go on, they announced that the band was not going to be playing. We were so disappointed, but what was worse is that they played cartoons for 20 minutes instead! First the band I've come to see isn't playing then you insult my intelligence by playing cartoons?! On a positive note, Yes was very good AND I did get to see Berlin live a few times here in SoCal!

4th of July!!
"X's version of a Christmas song." -John Doe
One of my ALL Time favorite bands, and the best band since The Doors to come out of Los Angeles IMO. I have loved (and so does my friend Teri) John Doe since about 1980, his voice is fantastic, he is dreamy and he is just so cool. Exene is so eccentric and smart AND cool and somehow the combination of their voices is cussin' beautiful! And she has great taste in men, having been married to John Doe and Viggo Mortensen!! I play this song EVERY 4th of July! I love love love this picture of them!

Belinda Carlisle, my favorite member of the Go-Go's, I love BC! I just finished reading her memoir "Lips Unsealed" and I'll be seeing the Go-Go's on their Happily Ever After Farewell Tour in a few weeks at the Greek. I'm excited! This is my favorite of her solo tunes. You can hear The Beach Boys genius Brian Wilson singing back up, what could be better? And she looks fantastic in this video, way to go "Babe"! BC was one fucked up woman for a LONG time, glad she finally got her act together, and now has peace in her life!
